Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. These black hat SEO techniques usually include one or more of the following characteristics:

breaks search engine rules and regulations
creates a poor user experience directly because of the black hat SEO techniques utilized on the Web site
unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.

White Hat SEO
Any SEO tactic that maintains the integrity of your website and the SERPs (search engine results pages) is considered a "white-hat" search engine optimization tactic. These are the only tactics that we will use whenever applicable and which enhance rather than detract from your website and from the rankings.

In many ways SEO is hacking.
Dont take offense. Its just that search engines keep rewriting their code to try and give dynamic sites a higher place. Answer sites, sites with articles, forums, blogs. And sale sites keep working to get around that. In hacking white, grey, and black hat are fairly common terms.

White-Hat refers to those who do not break laws, who follow rules, and do not violate EULAs or Terms of Service agreements.

Grey-Hat are those who are willing to break rules for what they feel is a cause of good.

Black-Hat are the "bad guys". Like in old american cowboy movies. They have no care for laws and rules, and they do things completely for themselves.

By the way, in the areas of hacking, and SEO, I consider myself whitehat. In SEO that means making recommendations which use sites the way those sites want to be used. Both the search engines, and other sites (social sites, forums, blogs, etc). A blackhat SEO tends to recommend abuses of social sites such as MySpace or abusing forums or abusing blogs using them strictly for advertising. There are ways to use them properly for SEO gains but of course spamming is quicker and easier than doing it right.

Google’s head of webspam, Matt Cutts, weighs in about big brand sites that have been banned for black hat seo practices during the Black Hat/White Hat session during SES San Jose 2008. I happened to be sitting beside him.

Black Hat is simply doing stuff that are not best practices! If I was to create 100 users and submit my web page to 400 different social media websites, I would be doing black hat SEO techniques. Spamming is black hat…

Forget Cross-Site Scripting. Forget SQL Injection. If you want to make some serious cash on the Web silently and surreptitiously, you dont need them. You also dont need noisy scanners, sophisticated proxies, 0-days, or ninja level reverse engineering skills — all you need is a Web browser, a clue on what to look for, and a few black hat tricks. Generating affiliate advertising revenue from the Website traffic of others, trade stock using corporation information passively gleaned, inhibit the online purchase of sought after items creating artificial scarcity, and so much more. Activities not technically illegal, only violating terms of service.

You may have heard these referred to as business logic flaws, but that name really doesnt do them justice. It sounds so academic and benign in that context when the truth is anything but. These are not the same ol Web hacker attack techniques everyone is familiar with, but the one staring you in the face and missed because gaming a system and making money this way couldnt be that simple. Plus IDS cant detect them and Web application firewalls cant black them. If fact, these types of attacks are so hard to detect (if anyone is actually trying) we arent even sure how widespread their use actually is. Time to pull back the cover and expose whats possible.

Black hat SEO almost always advertises “top page rank”, and usually turns it into a get rich quick scheme. Black hats always try to advise anyone who will listen that you can cheat the robots that go out to crawl your website and artificially inflate your website page rank. The white hat guys know better.
